LG hopes to put an HDR cat amongst the UHD Blu-ray pigeons with its first 4K Blu-ray player, the UP970. The brand plans to win sales from Samsung and Panasonic by announcing a Dolby Vision firmware upgrade for later this year. The deck is also compatible with HDR10. LG specializes in mass-market Blu-ray decks.
The first UHD discs with Dolby Vision support are expected from Warner Bros, Lionsgate and Universal later this year. Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata to optimize a TV’s HDR performance on a scene by scene basis. A Dolby Vision compatible TV is also required. Players without Dolby Vision will be able to read the standard static HDR10 layer.
It’s also expected that the deck will stream Netflix content in 4K with Dolby Vision, in line with its displays. Currently around 100 hours of content is available in Dolby Vision from OTT providers worldwide.
Oppo has also said that its UHD player, the UDP-203, will get a similar firmware update later this year.
The LG UP970 includes support for 10-bit colour and Rec 2020 colour gamut. It’s also compatible with Dolby True HD, Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio audio formats.
The UP970 features two HDMI ports, HDMI 2.0a for UHD video and an HDMI 1.4 for audio output that can connect with AVRs and sound bars. Ethernet and Wi-Fi are standard.
“The LG UP970 Dolby Vision-capable Ultra HD Blu-ray player is an excellent example of our commitment to offering an amazing home HDR viewing experience to our customers,” said Brian Kwon, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “We are proud to have an innovation partner such as Dolby to enhance our OLED and Super UHD TVs with their superior technology.”
