Animated hits Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 look likely to be the first UHD Blu-ray releases to offer Dolby Vision HDR, well as HDR10. But while their sleeves sport a Dolby Vision logo (pictured below), the discs do not have a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Top audio billing has been claimed by DTS: X. Both 4K Blu-ray titles will be released by Universal in the US on June 6.
Currently only three studios have committed to releasing 4K discs with Dolby Vision HDR: Universal, Lionsgate and Warner. Studio support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos continues to grow, at least theatrically.
New Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision titles upcoming include: Life, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Baywatch, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Annabelle 2, The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, Blade Runner 2049, Justice League, Power Rangers, Ghost in the Shell, The Fate of the Furious, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, Alien: Covenant, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Baywatch, Wonder Woman, The Mummy, Cars 3, Transformers: The Last Knight, Spider-Man: Homecoming, War for the Planet of the Apes, Atomic Blonde and The Dark Tower.
Currently there are more than 300 Dolby Cinema sites installed or committed to across the globe with more than 80 titles released or announced. The Dolby Vision laser projection system was co-developed with Christie who supplies, installs and services all the projector systems.
More than 2,700 screens have installed or are committed to Dolby Atmos in more than 75 countries, with more than 150 mixing facilities worldwide, and more than 650 titles announced with the audio format.
Dolby continues to introduce ways of lowering the cost of Dolby Atmos theatrical installation. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Dolby Laboratories unveiled a cost-effective all-in-one imaging server and audio processor, the Media Server IMS3000. The solution allows exhibitors to offer Dolby 5.1 or 7.1 with an easy upgrade path to Dolby Atmos. It has also unveiled a new multichannel amplifier. Able to replace up to 16 stereo amplifiers, the amp uses less space and produces less heat. The Dolby Multichannel Amplifier is available in two configurations, 24 channels or 32 channels.
The company is also offering exhibitors a quick install speaker solution. Its SLS Express Series consists of 3-Axis Speakers, and a Rapid Rigging System, which simplifies overhead speaker installation. The system works with new or existing equipment, offering exhibitors more flexibility in equipping any size room.
